Athletic Elgibility (Student Handbook pages eight and nine)
Romeo Community Schools and the athletic program believe that academics are, and should be, a student’s top priority. This policy is meant to encourage and emphasize to our middle school athletes to remain focused on their academics and to set, maintain, and seek academic goals. This policy is also meant to relay the importance and value of academics as a priority for their future.
Any middle school athlete who is not passing six classes in the previous quarter marking period will be ineligible for participation and will not be allowed to try out for a sports team. The fall season student athletes will be using their final grades as of the end of the previous school year. This policy will also apply to 6th grade students entering the 7th grade as well as 8th graders entering 9th grade.
Middle school athletes who, during the season, have recorded on their weekly progress report either two failures or two U’s on citizenship, or a combination of an F and U will become ineligible for the next week and will continue to be ineligible until they meet the minimum standard.Weekly in-season progress reports are to be handed in each Friday of their sport’s season.
Any middle school athlete who is ineligible for any two weeks (consecutive or otherwise) during a current season for academic or citizenship reasons will be removed from the team to concentrate on their schoolwork.
Students who are ineligible may not participate in any competitions or travel to any away games during their period of ineligibility.Students would be expected to continue team practice so as to maintain good physical condition thus to avoid injuries upon their return to competition.
Prior to the first day of practice/try-outs in any interscholastic sport, a student must have the following in order to be eligible for participation:
1)A current physical on file in the school office.Physicals dated after April 15th of the previous school year are considered current by the MHSSA.
2)A signed Pay-to-Participate application form with payment.Students must have a new application form completed for each sport.
